Second skin: 15 foundations that will illuminate your complexion

HOME / SHOPPING Second skin: 15 foundations that will illuminate your complexion GLADYS LAI 11 JULY 2021 From The Ordinary and Maybelline’s affordable cult foundations, to the luxe concoctions of Giorgio Armani and Koh Gen Do, we present 15 of the best foundations you should be adding to your beauty shelf. Vogue Australia may receive advertising or affiliate commission if you buy through our links. Read more here. Every beauty look needs a strong base, but good foundations are hard to come by. There are the all-too-common impediments—patchiness, inaccurate colour swatches, formulas that are overly viscous or watery. Then, there are the shade ranges themselves, options aplenty for fair and medium skin tones, with foundations for darker complexions few and far in between. Recent years, however, have seen staging of a beauty revolution. Not only are companies now expanding shade ranges for their skin products, but they’re also acknowledging the importance of offering foundations that are cruelty-free, and dual-functioning—formulas that are sun-protective, and operate both as make-up and skincare. Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, for example, made its entrepreneurial debut with a ground-breaking 50 shades, amassing an army of avid wearers for its buildable coverage and soft matte finish. Ilia, on the other hand, has made a name for itself with its vegan foundation-serum hybrid, so lightweight it assumes the appearance of a second skin. Here, we round up the best foundations you should be adding to your bathroom closet. From The Ordinary and Maybelline’s affordable cult foundation, to the luxe concoctions of Giorgio Armani and Koh Gen Do, scroll on to discover the beauty products that will give you that coveted lit-from-within glow. Shop now: Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear foundation, $53 from Sephora Estée Lauder’s Double Wear foundation is a beauty veteran. First released in 1997, the foundation has become a staple for those wanting their flawless complexion to last the course, and budge not a smidgeon from 9 to 5. Matte and oil-free, it’s suited especially well for oily and combination skin. Shop now: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Makeup, $60 from Adore Beauty Aloe, mastic and jojoba oil set Ilia’s foundation apart from the crowd, and speak to the company’s focus on both clean, botanical beauty, and make-up that doubles as skincare. This serum-like, liquid formula is easily buildable, and suited well to those with combination or oilier skin types. Shop now: Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation, $101.91 from Net-a-Porter High-impact pigments and a dewy finish have cemented this affordable foundation as a popular favourite. Our favourite part? It boasts the broad spectrum of an SPF50 sunscreen, and is a particularly apt choice for those with dry or sensitive skin types, including eczema or psoriasis-prone complexions. Apply to the face, décolleté and shoulders for an all-over glow that’s been formulated to be resistant to the catwalk’s bright lights. Shop now: Dior Face and Body Foundation, $70 from Sephora Clinique’s light-reflecting foundation has your skin’s best interests at heart. While SPF15 guards your skin against UVA/UVB rays, vitamin C works to reduce the appearance of dark spots, and encourage luminosity in the skin. Shop now: Clinique Even Better Glow Light Reflecting Makeup SPF 15 Foundation, $55 from Sephora Rosehip oil is the secret to this foundation’s success. Hydrating and lightweight, Zoeva’s Authentik foundation is available in 44 shades, and best applied with a buffer brush on dry to oily skin types. Shop now: Zoeva Authentik Skin foundation, $49 from Sephora What foundations are best for mature skin? Hormonal changes and reduced oil production means that mature skin tends to be drier, and becomes more prone to signs of natural ageing including age spots, wrinkles and dullness. The best foundations for mature skin, therefore, are lightweight and buildable, with additional ingredients like vitamin C, rosehip and jojoba oil to introduce luminosity. The hydrating properties of Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk, Clarins’ Skin Illusion, Clinique’s Even Better Glow, Ilia’s True Skin and Koh Gen Do’s Aqua foundations from the list above are thus best suited for older skin types. How do I find my foundation colour? Despite what the internet might have you believing, swatching foundations on the side of your neck or the underside of your wrist is not the best way to find an accurate colour match. Indeed, these areas of the face tend to be far paler than the rest of your skin, as they are exposed to less sun. Instead, take your foundation and apply it to three distinct areas of your face: your cheek, your jawbone, and the centre of your forehead. Once applied, make sure to see what it looks like both indoors and outdoors, as well as in natural and artificial light. Can foundation be used as concealer? While you certainly can use foundation as concealer if you’re looking for a natural or bare skin finish, the formulations of the two product types are distinctly different. Used both for coverage and highlighting (under the eyes and the centre of the forehead), concealer is considerably thicker than foundation, offering a fuller coverage that masks spots, acne and discolouration, even when used sparingly. Foundation, on the other hand, is often buildable, working to even out general skin tone. As a result, it’s not as effective for the targeted coverage concealer is specially formulated for. Makeup Artists Say These Foundations Are Best for Dry Skin

March 21, 2023

For those with dry skin—I’m combination, so I can relate half of the time—finding the right foundation can be frustrating.
