How Fashion and Beauty Brands are Celebrating Women's Month

Morena Baccarin’s “Easy Skincare” Calls for Face Oil and Naps

For the last two decades, the actress Morena Baccarin has honed her craft across film and television, rising to fame on the cult favorite Firefly, earning an Emmy nomination for her work on Homeland, and playing the female lead in the Deadpool franchise. But a few months after giving birth to her third child last March, the Brazilian-born star was given a rare opportunity to co-lead her first show on network television. It was an opportunity that she couldn’t pass up.

Hannah Betts's Better...not younger: How eyeshadow has suddenly hit a purple patch

Say ‘very peri’ to a woman in midlife and you’re likely to get punched. When my inbox filled up with the term in early December, I assumed I was being trolled. In fact, 17-3938 Very Peri is Pantone’s colour of the year 2022, the first time in more than two decades that the branding company has created its own shade to ‘truly reflect the transformative times’ in which we live.

This is Generation You

GRLPWR is back. Rustan’s The Beauty Source’s (RTBS) annual Women’s Month celebration kicks off with a new theme that calls for being unapologetically bold and confident because the future belongs to those who dare to use their femininity to make a difference.

How to Look Rich, According to People Pretending to Be Rich

Some wealth announces itself loudly with logos or the unmistakable shape of a Birkin bag. Some wealth slips past discreetly. Michal Kurtis, a luxury-fashion consultant, knows of shoppers who will spend $100,000 on clothing from the Row that’s barely identifiable to the untrained eye. Clothes like these are a secret language, communicating wealth only to those in the know.

Not only is your foundation less likely to slide or cake up around blemishes by midday, but you also get natural-looking coverage

11 Iconic Red Lipstick Looks, Explained

“The rules for wearing red lipstick are that there are no rules, just like in Fight Club,” Debbie Harry tells me over e-mail when I ask her to describe the ethos behind her standout makeup looks. Who am I to argue with the Blondie legend when it comes to red lipstick decorum? Her iconic on-and-off stage beauty looks, after all, were constant, indelible perfection—in part due to the fact that she never shied away from a bold red lip (accompanied, of course, by layers of sexy blonde locks swooped over one eye and a fierce jolt of confidence).

11 Eye Makeup Removers That Simplify Your Cleansing Routine

When it comes to beauty, there are a few rules—the most important of which is to never go to bed with makeup on. Ever. Speaking in absolutes may seem extreme, but in this case, we’re adamant in making our case. Consider this ultimate PSA: improper (or straight-up, lack of) eye makeup removal can affect eye, lash, and brow health. And yes, we know, we know: the last thing we want to do at the end of a long day is remove our makeup, but trust us. With the right eye makeup remover, it’ll feel less like an obligation and more like a staple part of your evening skincare ritual. Of course, thorough facial cleansing is equally important, as this will save your silk pillowcases and sheets from hard-to-clean mascara smudges.

The 13 Foundations Celebrity Makeup Artists Always Use on Women Over 40

As someone who has a 71-year-old beauty fanatic as her mother (surprising I became a beauty editor, right?), I know all too well the trials and tribulations surrounding foundation and mature skin. Of course, finding the best foundation for your skin texture, tone, and type is hard enough at any age, but when you throw into the mix age-related conundrums like discoloration from sun damage, fine lines, or wrinkles, and dehydration, the challenge only gets steeper.

Kate Hudson’s Ambiguously Retro Glam Is A Nod To Several Bygone Eras

It’s still early days, but it seems safe to say that nostalgic glam has the 2020s in a chokehold. Trends from the ‘90s and early 2000s such as money piece highlights and French manicures are undoubtedly at the forefront, but styles inspired by the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s are becoming just as prevalent.

As a Beauty Writer, I Can Vouch for Carrie Bradshaw's Go-To (and Affordable!) Blush

Carrie Bradshaw's refined, impeccable, and surprising wardrobe is usually what gets the spotlight when it comes to Sex and the City fanfare but my fixation with the iconic character has always been more about the beauty look, especially as someone with curly hair. In And Just Like That… Sarah Jessica Parker's character has forgone the curly locks, but is still giving us major beauty newness to obsess over.

But in And Just Like That…, the 10-episode reboot of Sex and the City that is set to premiere on HBO Max today, beauty finally gets a starring role.

Sarah Jessica Parker's Makeup Artist Dropped Her Entire "And Just Like That" Glam Routine

Since its premiere, the HBO Max series has brought us everything from nostalgic accessory callbacks to conversation-starting maxi dresses, proving that the show's wardrobe department hasn't missed a beat. 15 Top-Rated Foundations for Your Dewiest Skin Ever

As much as we’d like our complexion to look naturally plump and radiant at all times, that’s not always so easy. A carefully curated skincare routine may help in time, but a top-rated, dewy foundation will help you instantly achieve the look you want. Of course, that’s not to say that every bottle of dewy foundation is one size fits all. Some are ripe with skincare benefits that work dual-duty to reverse signs of aging, while others offer a super-sheer finish born to enhance the appearance of your natural skin.

Gommage Exfoliators: The Most Satisfying Way to ‘Erase’ Dead Skin

It seems like there are as many types of exfoliators as there are sheet masks. There are traditional grainy scrubs, facial peels, exfoliating sheet masks, microdermabrasion kits and exfoliating pads. We haven’t even touched on the professional methods. But there’s one extremely effective method that doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves. We’re talking about gommage exfoliators.

Holiday Makeup: Kim Kardashian’s Makeup Artist Tells You How To Glow at Your Next Party

Festive season is upon us, and for those keen on a little glow and sparkle, a well-honed holiday makeup look is a must. Given that there’s every excuse for a little extra shine, smoke, and, yes, sculpt, who better than the reigning king of contour Mario Dedivanovic to be our guide for a scene-stealing look? “It’s that time of year where you can really have fun and feel more confident trying something new and different,” says Dedivanovic of executing a deliciously daring holiday makeup strategy. “You tend to be a little bit more bold and playful.” Here, the pro behind Kim Kardashian‘s preternatural glow reveals his holiday party-ready tricks and techniques, from crafting a perfect canvas to executing his signature “soft sculpting” and “lip lift” techniques. Activate a Luminous Glow After prepping the skin with a veil of emollient moisturizer, such as Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Cream, to keep makeup set for longer, Dedivanovic suggests upping the wattage for a look that “glows at night” by tapping Elizabeth Arden’s balmy Eight Hour Cream onto the center of the lids or lips for an “extra bit of glossiness.” For a natural luminosity, use a featherweight liquid foundation like the Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation or something even lighter like Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer that will blend seamlessly into the skin for subtle, nearly imperceptible coverage. Sculpt and Highlight Imperceptibly “Now that everyone knows how to contour and it’s become part of their everyday beauty routine, people are realizing that you can achieve a sculpted look with a lot less makeup,” says Dedivanovic of pioneering his “soft sculpting” technique. To apply bronzer, use a tapered contour brush and a powder formula that’s not too warm or red-toned like Dedivanovic’s Makeup by Mario Soft Sculpt Bronzer. Start slightly above the hollows of the cheeks, then “blend upward to subtly lift the skin and add some warmth,” instructs Dedivanovic. “This will create a natural sculpt.” Then, add a wash of contour on the eyes for an overall more “natural, monochromatic” effect. For highlighting, Dedivanovic recommends wetting a highlighter brush before dipping it into a powder highlighter, such as his Soft Glow formula, and applying it evenly and softly on the high planes of the face so that it builds for a “melted” effect. “Instead of the product sitting on the skin, it feels like it’s a part of it,” says Dedivanovic. Photo: Instagram.com/kimkardashian Smoke the Eyes Effortlessly “When I think of the holiday season, my mind goes straight to creamy metallic eyeshadows you can apply in one swipe,” explains Dedivanovic, whose Master Metals eyeshadow palette pigments can be transformed with a few drops of his pro mixing liquid to create a molten, liquid foil effect. If you’re partial to powder, wet one or more of the bold, shimmering shades from holiday party-ready The Nudes 3 palette with a brush and blend into lids to smoky effect. Alternatively, when using eyeliner, rim the upper and lower lash lines with an eye brush to blend out the lines for another “instant smoky eye.” Give Yourself a Lip Lift “I’m just loving matte lips right now,” says Dedivanovic. “For the holidays, it’s all about those bold berries and deeper reds—they’re very wearable.” To create the illusion of fuller lips, look to Dedivanovic’s TikTok-viral “lip lift” strategy, which consists of slightly overlining the upper lip line, paying most attention to the Cupid’s bow area, and the bottom lip, extending the liner upwards towards the outer corners of the mouth, then diffusing and blending the lip liner with a brush. Then, to up the impact, go over it with a matte lipstick, such as his Ultra Suede formula in warm crimson Alicia. For a flawless finish, take a little bit of foundation or concealer and use a brush to refine the edges of lips, starting from the inner lips and brushing to the outer corners. “Especially for more mature women, it gives you a mini lip lift,” says Dedivanovic. Once the lip is in place, add a sheer layer of translucent powder to set it and prevent feathering as the night goes on. Japanese beauty brands have much to offer, from the best, carefully sourced ingredients to attractive packaging that imparts a feel of science meets luxury. While Korean beauty brands (or K-Beauty) have grown rapidly both in Asia and in the West thanks to a more conspicuous marketing and social media push, Japanese beauty brands are just starting to generate increasing interest in the West.

7 of the best photo finish foundations for your next big event

Regardless of the time of year, we always like to look our best. But with the silly season upon us and cameras being shoved in our face at every turn, we’re on high alert for makeup that makes us look flawless amongst all that flash.

‘I’m a Makeup Artist From a Place Where Temps Dip Below Zero, and These Are My Cold-Weather Makeup Essentials’

Growing up in Montana, celebrity makeup artist Mary Irwin learned the importance of protecting her skin in the winter. Sub-zero temps are to be expected in this mountainous region, so proper skin care is a must. Whenever the now-New York City-based makeup artist returns home, she knows that it's time to kick her routine into high gear, using the most hydrating and moisturizing ingredients so her makeup doesn't freeze up and flake off of her skin.

Holiday Makeup: How to Glow and Sparkle at Your Next Party, According to Kim Kardashian West’s Makeup Artist

Meet the Roommates (and the Makeup Artist Behind Their Looks) of "The Sex Lives of College Girls"

If you ask us, Emmy®-nominated writer and producer Mindy Kaling is the true Queen of Comedy. From her days playing a snarky Kelly Kapoor in The Office to her hilarious hit show The Mindy Project and as the voice of Disgust in Inside Out (it’s not *only* a kid’s movie!), she always knows how to make us laugh. So when we heard that she was teaming up with writer and producer Justin Noble to create The Sex Lives of College Girls, a new HBO Max show following four college roommates during their freshman year, we were instantly on board. And we weren’t the only ones who were psyched.

7 Things Beauty Editors Will Never Do to Their Skin in Winter (and 8 They Will)

A change of seasons means it’s time to change out your wardrobe, but it also means it’s time to switch up your skincare routine. In the summer, we tend to opt for lightweight, gel moisturizers and cooling products to combat the heat. The winter brings drier, cooler climates, which can seriously mess with your skin.

The Essential Guide to Makeup Removers for a Gentle, Thorough Clean

After a quiet year that was famously light on makeup, now comes the maximalist moment. Halloween brings an occasion to transform, whether it’s a zombie makeover inspired by The Walking Dead’s final season or a Kim Kardashian West homage in face-obscuring Balenciaga—with, of course, perfect contouring underneath. Next come the holiday parties, where stay-put lip stains are the evening staple. That’s all to say, the time has come to stock up on the best makeup removers. While longwear makeup formulations have their obvious advantages, they can sometimes do the job too well, proving near impossible to take off with the average cleanser. “Waterproof makeup is given the ‘water-proofing’ effect with silicone or acrylate polymers,” says clean cosmetic chemist Krupa Koestline, founder of KKT Cosmetics, who notes that more “natural” versions typically rely on waxes that increase their staying power. Dedicated makeup removers are uniquely equipped to help. “These contain specific surfactants and emulsifiers that bind to these polymers and solubilize them, so they are easily removed with water,” she says. Though such compounds could be harsh in the past—the lesser evil to elbow grease—newer formulations are now taking a different approach. “Over the years, it’s become more gentle for the skin,” confirms Erin Parsons, the makeup artist behind Gigi Hadid’s sky-blue eye shadow for this year’s Met Gala and herself a skilled chameleon. These days, she says, you can find makeup removers that can tackle extreme pigments and hydrate the skin. When removing heavy makeup on her clients, she prefers to start with an oil cleanser, massaging it directly into dry skin. Once it begins to break down the makeup, “you just add water and it further dissolves the product until it completely melts away,” she says. Another smart option is a biphase makeup remover—a vinaigrette-like mix designed to be shaken before use—which can be good for targeting small areas of the face. “The lipid phase helps dissolve oil-soluble makeup, then the aqueous phase helps rinse the makeup away,” says Michele Farber, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Philadelphia. But if one has a regular face wash on hand, how necessary is a makeup remover, really? It’s a small but important distinction: A makeup remover squarely takes aim at cosmetic formulations, from all-day foundation to no-budge liner. “A cleanser, on the other hand, is designed to help remove dirt on skin and in pores,” says Farber. While some products can do both, it can be a rare find. Plus, makeup removers are now tailored to suit different preferences, adds Parsons, with something for everyone. To All the Beauty Products She's Loved Before: Lana Condor Shares Her Favorites

The Lineup is a monthly series where we're giving you an inside peek at the beauty lineups of cool fashion people, editors, makeup artists, hairstylists, and estheticians—all the people we trust the most. Get ready for a behind-the-scenes look at all the can’t-live-without products that make their worlds go 'round. If there's one thing you should know about me, it's my unwavering love for romance movies, specifically teen romantic comedies that hit you right in the feels. So when Netflix's To All the Boys I've Loved Before, starring Lana Condor, came out and dominated the trending list for weeks on end, it also dominated the Friday nights I spent rewatching my favorite scenes with a pint of ice cream and eye masks. But let me make one thing clear: I may have come for the love story, but I stayed for Condor's flawless skin. Condor is the definition of a true multi-hyphenate: She's an actress, producer, YouTuber (her vlogs are top-tier), and skincare enthusiast. Like any movie fanatic, I watched her press interviews for a behind-the-scenes look at the movie. But as a budding beauty fanatic, I truly wanted the inside scoop on the routine that leaves Condor with glowing skin on and off-screen. Luckily for you and me, she did us all a favor and shared her top beauty picks with us. PHOTO: LANA CONDOR "I was a dancer when I was younger, so I wore a lot of stage makeup. I always loved playing with makeup and creating different looks that would match my moods or outfits, etc.," says Condor. With age, she has come to realize that true beauty encompasses so much more than appearance and starts from within. To her, beauty is about "taking care of yourself, listening to your instincts, and choosing kindness even when it isn't necessarily easy. We need to take the time to tend to our minds and hearts the same way we wash our faces every night." And while we can all agree that inner beauty is the most important, there's nothing wrong with giving your skin a little extra love to achieve that lit-from-within glow. When it comes to investing in skin treatments, Condor says that infrared saunas and cryotherapy are worth the splurge. "Sweating out toxins in the sauna has worked magic on my skin, and the tightening anti-inflammatory benefits I get from cryo have been amazing for my skin, too," Condor says. "I also maintain the position that good skin starts with your gut health. I don't believe you need to spend a lot of money on crazy expensive skin treatments. Rather, start with healing your gut. When you care about your gut and start to heal that, your skin is directly affected." Dark Circles Where? These 13 Color Correctors are Practically Magic

If you've ever dealt with dark circles under your eyes, you know the struggle is real. It's hard to mask the darkness in a way that looks natural and flawless. The trick here, though, is to find the right product—and that's where color correctors come in. "When you don't want to cake on concealer to cover dark circles, color correcting will be your best friend," explains makeup artist and groomer Janice Kinjo, whose clients include Mindy Kaling, Uzo Aduba, and Gabrielle Union. "It is a way to instantly neutralize discoloration, dark circles, and blemish marks underneath your foundation/concealer." The 13 Best Color Correctors for Dark Circles, Hands Down PHOTO: @MEXICANBUTJAPANESE You might think that color correctors and concealers are one and the same (I used to think they were interchangeable), but they're two very different products. "Concealers are significantly different than color correctors," says makeup artist Gina Brooke, whose clients include Cate Blanchett, Kim Kardashian West, and Kerry Washington. "Concealers are highly pigmented and meant to conceal and highlight the skin while matching your skin tone, whereas color correctors are specifically designed to neutralize imperfections by toning down the color of the melanin to create a seamless look." How to Shop for a Color Corrector The 13 Best Color Correctors for Dark Circles, Hands Down PHOTO: @ISABELLECOHEEN Brooke says that choosing a color corrector can be more complicated than choosing a new shade of foundation. That's because they're designed to work by neutralizing the skin using the opposite shade on discolored areas. She recommends looking for light formulas that are buildable. "To keep it simple, for fair complexions, look for pastel color correctors," Kinjo suggests. "For medium tones, yellow, orange, and peach correctors. For dark tones, [try] deep peach to dark orange. Shade-matching will be easier when keeping those tips in mind." How to Apply Color Correctors Makeup artist Carolina Dalí-Trites, whose clients include Constance Wu and Storm Reid, says it's important to prep and moisturize the under-eye area first so that your makeup can glide on and blend easily. She shared her prep routine, saying, "I start off by applying on clean skin the Russak Dermatology Clinic Chill Out CBD-infused under-eye gel mask—it helps de-puff, soothe, and moisturize the under-eye area. Leave on for 15 to 30 minutes while you're doing your hair, choosing an outfit, or whatever else you're up to in the a.m. For best under-eye mask results, store in a cool place or fridge. Follow with the La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Eye Cream—this cream is hydrating yet not oily, wears nicely under makeup, and has a touch of luminosity, which will help reflect light and instantly make the under-eye area look a little brighter. It's important to choose a moisturizer that's not too rich or oily because that will make the makeup crease." ADVERTISING La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Eye Cream LA PRAIRIE Skin Caviar Luxe Eye Cream $400 SHOP NOW Favorite After prepping, Kinjo recommends applying the corrector just on the area—that's because color correctors have a thicker formulation, so you don't want it to look caked-on. "Then, apply your foundation or concealer on top and blend with your finger, brush, or sponge," she says. "Again, color correctors neutralize color, so there is no need to pack on the foundation or concealer. All it comes down to is blending it with your foundation." Best Makeup Remover Cloth

Which makeup remover cloth is best? Whether you only wear a little lip balm and mascara when you step outside or you wear a full face of makeup on a daily basis, removing your makeup can be a multi-step process. But makeup remover wipes and cloths are a fast, easy solution to the makeup removal process. Makeup remover cloths are washcloth-like products that have a lot of soft fibers. When these cloths are damp, the weave of the fabric magically lifts the makeup off your face without smearing the makeup around, so you don’t need any cleanser. A great option is the Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water Cloths. What to know before you buy a makeup remover cloth Reusable vs. disposable cloths Makeup remover cloths tend to be reusable, while makeup remover wipes are usually disposable. There are pros and cons to each type. For example, makeup remover cloths are machine washable, environmentally friendly, cost effective, non-irritating, gently exfoliating and deep cleaning. On the other hand, wipes are hygienic, travel friendly, workout-ready and hassle-free. Right size and shape for you Makeup remover cloths usually differ in size from about 4-by-5 inches to 12-by-12 inches. Larger cloths tend to last longer before they need to be washed. Cloths also usually come in either a square or rectangular shape, but there are some mitts out there that offer more targeted control. On the go Makeup remover wipes are also a great option to take when you’re out and about. For example, you can take wipes to the gym to remove all of the sweat on your face after a draining workout. At the end of the day, you can use makeup remover wipes to remove makeup, soothe and hydrate your skin, exfoliate and cleanse. Many makeup remover wipes also come in travel-friendly packages that you can put in your purse or carry-on bag. What to look for in a quality makeup remover cloth Material Most makeup remover cloths are composed of synthetic fibers — usually polyester — which are less prone to bacterial growth than cotton. Microfiber cloths tend to be less soft than the cloths designed for makeup removal, but they are typically more exfoliating. Micellar water Many makeup remover wipes feature micellar water, which helps draw out oil, dirt and impurities without overdrying your skin. Beneficial qualities There are many makeup remover cloths out there that have soothing, hydrating or exfoliating qualities. Look for the cloths that will work best for you and your skin. How much you can expect to spend on a makeup remover cloth Makeup remover cloths and wipes start around $5-$9 for a 30-count package, while individually wrapped cloths and wipes you would find at a boutique hotel or spa can cost up to $40 for the same number. You can also find packages with 25-30 high-quality, feature-packed makeup remover wipes for about $12-$20. Makeup remover cloth FAQ Can you really remove long-wearing or waterproof mascara with a makeup remover cloth? A. Yes, you can remove waterproof or long-wearing mascara with makeup remover cloths or wipes. Wipes will remove your long-wearing and waterproof eye makeup much easier and faster than cloths, but you can still use makeup remover cloths with a little extra tugging and rubbing. If you find it difficult to remove your eye makeup with a makeup remover cloth, just apply a little extra eye makeup remover to the cloth. What are your options for makeup remover cloths if you try to only use green, nontoxic beauty products? A. Makeup remover cloths don’t include any harsh chemicals, so they are your best option when it comes to green and non-toxic beauty products for removing makeup. You can also find makeup remover wipes that are advertised as free of harmful chemicals like phenoxyethanol or parabens. You should search for makeup remover wipes or cloths that feature plant-based ingredients and are free of fragrance and dye, since those tend to be less toxic than other options. What type of makeup remover cloths should you use for acne-prone skin? A. Using makeup remover cloths or wipes of any kind will reduce your acne, especially if you use them before and after a sweaty workout. Make sure to find makeup remover wipes that are advertised as oil-free. Also, keep in mind that makeup remover wipes with micellar water might not be cleansing enough if you have oily and acne-prone skin, so you should look for wipes that are marketed as clarifying instead of hydrating. Dakota Johnson's Romantic Hairstyle is Proof Cottagecore is Here to Stay

Considering just how versatile, customizable, personal, and downright pretty they can be, it’s almost shocking to think that for many, ponytails are relegated exclusively to the gym or backyard. If you’re a ponytail doubter, convinced that the style is purely functional, please focus your attention on Dakota Johnson. Hemingway had his brusque prose, Rothko had his colors, and Johnson has her ponytails. With her go-to glam team, the pulled-back styles become works of art — and her latest creation is a full-on masterpiece. Concocted by Mark Townsend, her go-to stylist, Dakota Johnson’s braided ponytail is a modernized, real-life version of something you might see on a fairytale princess. Together with makeup artist Georgie Eisdell, the trio has produced more copyable looks in a few weeks than many come up with all year. This latest look, created for the Mill Valley Film Festival, features Johnson in an autumn-appropriate velvet puff-sleeve dress with shimmery, lash-heavy makeup and this show-stopping braid. While most of it is elegantly pinned back, Townsend left several gently-waved tendrils loose around Johnson’s face for a romantic, tousled effect. Dakota Johnson facing away to show off long braided ponytail @marktownsend1 A style this good needs to be replicated immediately — and thankfully, Townsend was kind enough to share a brief look at what went into the braided updo on his Instagram. As with any sculpted or structured style, the texture is all-important to allow grip for pins, hair bands, and woven strands. Too silky-smooth and it’ll all slide right out, which is why so many top stylists recommend a dry shampoo or second-day hair for updos. In this case, Townsend used the incredible-smelling Dove Volume And Fullness Dry Shampoo all over Johnson’s hair before pinning it in place. In another post, Townsend mentions the dry shampoo is also a consistent must-use at the crown of the head and in her fluffy, lash-skimming bangs. A bit of Goop’s new Glow Restore + Shine Hair Serum adds gloss and sealant to hair’s ends, too. Eisdell revealed the long, defined eyelashes came courtesy of IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara, which features a buildable formula and bristle-packed brush. A combination of Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua and Chanel Vitalumière foundations buff a creamy, clean finish into Johnson’s skin to create the perfect canvas for the rest of the products. Finally, her full, satin lip look was built from the Victoria Beckham Beauty Lip Definer in Shade 2 and kept supple and hydrated with the Goop Goopgenes Lip Balm. In an alternate universe it’s clear that Johnson would have excelled as a Disney princess — with hair like that, she’d probably be the most enchanting one. How to do Soft Glam Makeup, According to a Makeup Artist

Like fashion, beauty trends tend to follow a pattern — what was once in style will inevitably go out of style, but will become sought after again at some point. The latest fad to follow this timeline and make its way back into the spotlight is soft glam makeup. The timing couldn't be better as we gear up for the holidays and prepare to reunite with family and friends in intimate gatherings. Shop TODAY spoke to makeup artist Katie Mellinger to help break down what exactly soft glam is and how to achieve the elegant look at home. What is soft glam makeup? Just a step above the 'no makeup' makeup look, Mellinger described soft glam as "makeup application where there are no hard lines." In other words, beauty products are blended in very well and the look is achieved without the presence of contoured lines, heavy lip or eyeliner, or sharp, filled-in eyebrows. Despite the absence of heavy makeup, the look isn't completely natural, either. "It's kind of like an elevated version of yourself, but it still looks like makeup, in my opinion," she told us. Mellinger isn't surprised about the renewed interest in soft glam looks on social media. (The hashtag #softglam currently has over 93 million views on TikTok, for example.) She described beauty trends as a pendulum that goes back and forth, so no matter how far it swings it one direction, it'll always make its way back. "We [gravitated towards] these heavily drag-influenced makeup looks, now we're swinging back in the other direction," she said. "You kind of saw it with "Euphoria"...playing with makeup like that, having these cool little accents but more on a natural base. Now we're coming around to this makeup that looks like makeup but isn't quite natural." How to give your face a soft glam glow When applying foundation, Mellinger likes to apply a little bit at first with a dual-fiber brush then buff it out with a beauty blender. "Depending on your skin type [and] what you're trying to cover, you just want to put it where you need it, which tends to be the T-zone," she explained. If you're using a heavier cream foundation, she noted that a kabuki brush may be better suited to breaking it down and helping blend out the look. If you need to set with a powder, she recommends keeping it light and applying it around the same area where you used foundation. She recommends applying a creamy concealer just where you need it. "I wouldn't go too far up to the lash line because you don't want it to be so harsh. When you're applying eye shadow, you're going to want to blend a halo around the eye. If you mix that with the concealer, it can get a little muddy." When it comes to contouring, try to keep it on the light side since soft glam doesn't call for hard lines. Mellinger recommends using a cream bronzer or foundation that's a few shades darker than your normal color and blending it in really well. "Smile and get to the hollows of your cheeks, but you don't want to see that you really contoured your face," she said. "If you're going along your hairline [with] a bronzer, stipple it with a sponge for no hard lines." If you're applying blush, she advises to stick to the apple of the cheek. "Smile [to] see where your apples are and use the butt of a beauty blender to stipple it on." Once you've got your blush on, you can blend out the edges with your fingers. If you're in a pinch or don't have cream blush on hand, you can also use lipstick, according to Mellinger. Finally, for highlighter, she recommends tapping it on with your fingers. "The warmth of your fingers is going to help it blend into your skin," she explained. She also advises to only apply it to a few key areas — primarily your cheekbones, nose bridge and the bow of your lip. How to achieve a soft glam eye look Now that your base is finished, it's time to work on the eyes. Mellinger recommends sticking with neutral eye shadow tones to achieve the soft glam look. Depending on the level of glam you want to achieve, you can opt for a matte or shimmery neutral. She also recommends applying a little eye shadow below the lower lash line to create what's called a "drop shadow." Next, skip the eyeliner and head straight for the mascara. "I would go for something that's volumizing...you don't want to go crazy with a ton of coats of mascara but you want thick, fluffy lashes." Your eyebrows should also look as natural as possible when it comes to achieving the perfect soft glam look. Mellinger recommends using a fine-tipped pencil and filling in from the arch toward the end with light strokes. Once you've filled in a little bit — but not too much — go back in with a spoolie to soften the color. Once the brow is filled in, Mellinger likes to comb a brow gel directly into the hairs without touching the skin to pull it all together. How to achieve a soft glam lip look Now that your base and eye area is done, there's only one thing left to take care of: lips! Mellinger recommends sticking with a neutral lip color, one that's not too far off from your natural shade. Her advice for picking the right lipstick color is to look at the color of your natural lips and go one or two shades darker. If you want to use lip liner, she recommends softening the edges with a brush to get the proper look. While so many steps may seem overwhelming to nail the perfect soft glam glow, Mellinger has an integral tip for anyone out there who wants to try it out at home. "Anything with makeup, I always say that it comes off. So if you mess up, you can just take it off," she offered. The J-beauty Foundation Lana Condor Swears by for Flawless On-Camera Skin

Although K-beauty may have taken the world by storm first (or at least the loudest), there’s a quiet confidence in the beauty buys and trends brought to us from Japan. Known for acing it when it comes to innovative textures and formulas, our interest is always peaked when we hear about a hero product hailing from the country. And even more so when it’s a favourite of an actress like Lana Condor, who we sure has the pick of the bunch when it comes to beauty. In a recent interview with The Cut, the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before star shared her love for the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation ($116.57 at Revolve). “I’ve been using this foundation on camera forever,” she told the publication. “It’s a lightweight, barely-there foundation, and it really looks like skin. You don’t need a lot of it. I like to show my skin — I don’t want to cover it — and this really works for that.” The brand is well known among celebrity makeup artists and was created by Japanese actress Ai Saotome. In fact, Mario Dedivanovic (AKA @makeupbymario and the magician behind many of Kim Kardashian’s looks) is also a big fan. The makeup artist recommended it during an Instagram Live, as reported by Cosmopolitan, and said: "For more natural foundations, I'm loving the Koh Gen Do, the Aqua. It builds up really beautifully, so if someone likes more coverage, you can sort of just build up little by little, and it gives the most stunning look of real skin coming through, but still giving that flawless polished look. That's one of my favourites, and it's been for a while now." The $70 buy is often compared to Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation ($105 at giorgioarmanibeauty.com.au) for having similar coverage and a natural finish. RATED 5/5 STARS BY OUR REVIEW CREW According to Youtuber Amanda Z, who compares the two in a video, the main difference is that Luminous Silk will provide a more flawless, photo-ready finish (think: wedding day), while the Aqua Foundation is more skin-like and hydrating. The 13 Foundations Celebrity Makeup Artists Always Use on Women Over 40

As someone who has a 71-year-old beauty fanatic as her mother (surprising I became a beauty editor, right?), I know all too well the trials and tribulations surrounding foundation and mature skin. Of course, finding the best foundation for your skin texture, tone and type is hard enough at any age, but when you throw into the mix age-related conundrums like discolouration from sun damage, fine lines or wrinkles and dehydration, the challenge only gets steeper. Best foundations for mature skin: Reese Witherspoon on set PHOTO: @REESEWITHERSPOON Being that my mum is an actual makeup artist, I've definitely absorbed some of her wisdom and tips over the years—minimal, if any, powder and absolutely no super-matte formulas. She has flawless skin (both with and without makeup), so I've taken her guidance to heart. That said, I was interested to compare notes with some of the top celebrity makeup artists in the industry who regularly cater to Hollywood's leading ladies 40 and over. What foundations do they always have on hand for red carpet prep, and what application tips do they hold gospel to ensure their clients with mature skin look as radiant and healthy as possible? They're covering all that and more below. Keep scrolling! Their Best Foundation, Product and Application Tips Tip #1: Your Skin Prep Is Everything Best Foundations for Mature Skin: Josh Rosebrook Hydration Accelerator JOSH ROSEBROOK Hydration Accelerator £35 SHOP NOW Favorite Every makeup artist we spoke to explained that without a well-prepped base (i.e. hydrated and healthy skin) any foundation application will flounder. Prepping the skin with the right products and ample moisture is crucial for a seamless, long-lasting finish. "I am really, really big on prep—prep is EVERYTHING," exclaims celebrity makeup artist Tamah Krinsky, whose clients include Julianna Margulies, Mary Steenburgen, Judy Greer, Idina Menzel and Christy Turlington. "Regardless of age, how you prep your skin determines how your foundation will sit on your skin, and the more hydrated and healthy your skin is to start, the better your foundation will look. My clients would tell you skin prep is the longest part of their time in the makeup chair with me!" Krinsky recommends starting the process with a luxe spray like Josh Rosebrook's Hydration Accelerator (£35) before moving onto an oil. She typically applies around six drops, although it depends on the day and client. "I take three to five minutes to massage the oil from the hairline to the collarbones. It's amazing what that alone can do for your complexion! My favourites are Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Oil (£61), Eve Lom Radiance Face Oil (£60) and the Josh Rosebrook Herbal Infusion Oil (£44)," she says. Afterward, she'll press a pea-sized amount of moisturiser into the skin to lock all the magic in. She loves anything from Drunk Elephant, Dr. Hauschka or La Roche-Posay. Our makeup artists were equally divided in their preference! So we recommend trying both methods to see what you prefer. That said, if you go the brush route, Krinsky recommends using multiple sizes and always reaching for a brush with synthetic brush fibres versus natural hair. "No matter what foundation I'm using, I always use two brushes—one to deposit the formula and one to blend," she confirms. "I like to use brushes on the smaller side so I can be specific and blend around the structure of the face. To deposit foundation, I use a small flat synthetic eye shadow brush. Synthetic brushes don't hold onto pigment and products as much as natural hair brushes, so you save your products from being wasted, and they leave the foundation where you put them." To blend, Krinsky tells us she switches to a medium-sized fluffy eye shadow contour brush. Although her brush process takes more time than using a Beautyblender, she thinks it offers more precision in addition to a more seamless result. Best foundations for mature skin: Charlotte Tilbury Eye Blender Brush CHARLOTTE TILBURY Eye Blender Brush £25 SHOP NOW Favorite Tip #3: Don't Buy Foundation When You're in a Hurry Sorry, but finding the right foundation—consistency, finish and shade—takes some time and effort. And Krinsky is especially adamant about taking the time to find your perfect shade. "Make sure you are matching your skin tone," she advises. "Always ask for a sample (or better yet, multiple!) and look at yourself in daylight. It should look 100% seamless, and if it isn’t, it’s the wrong shade for you." Tip #4: Don't Apply Foundation to Your Entire Face "Only use foundation where you need it," Krinsky adds. "Use small amounts, and take your time to blend them into your skin. You don't have to apply a huge amount of foundation to your entire face. You should be using it to even out your skin tone—not to cover your skin." Tip #5: The Right Primer Can Be a Great Sidekick Hourlgass N°28 Primer Serum HOURLGASS N° 28 Primer Serum £64 SHOP NOW Favorite "I love to apply this primer from Hourglass after the moisturiser I applied has fully absorbed," celebrity makeup artist Quinn Murphy shares. "It fills in any texture issues like wrinkles, lines, and/or pores while simultaneously neutralising excess grease and oil. It also reflects light in a beautiful way—almost like a blur tool." Tip #6: Apply Concealer Before Foundation Best foundations for mature skin: Serge Lutens Une Bonne Correction Concealer Palette SERGE LUTENS Une Bonne Correction Concealer Palette £134 SHOP NOW Favorite "Concealer always comes before foundation and in a warm peachy shade," Murphy adds. "I apply the concealer in the dark areas under the eyes and over any redness too. Then, I pat on the foundation over the concealer. Using colour theory—the opposite of purple-y dark circles is orange-salmon—is important. It cancels out the bruise-like tones so you don't end up over-applying foundation." Tip #7: Forgo Powder—or Apply It With a Beautyblender Best foundations for mature skin: Beautyblender Pro Black BEAUTYBLENDER Pro Black £17 SHOP NOW Favorite Both Murphy and Chanel makeup artist Kate Lee (who counts women like Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain as regular clients) recommend eliminating—or at least limiting—your powder usage since it can sit into mature skin's fine lines and make a person look older. "If I need powder, I use a transparent HD powder on a dampened Beautyblender and roll it into the skin," shares Lee. Best foundations for mature skin: Chantecaille HD Perfecting Powder CHANTECAILLE HD Perfecting Powder £64 SHOP NOW Favorite Tip #8: Know Which Products Should Be Luminous and Which Should be Matte Best foundations for mature skin: Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base CHANEL Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base £43 SHOP NOW Favorite Okay, there's some science involved here. While our makeup artists agree the best foundations for mature skin should be more luminous and dewy rather than matte, you don't want to verge shimmery, and certain complementary products (such as bronzer) should always be matte. "Concealer under the eye should be a light and luminous formulation, and concealer to hide blemishes or dark spots needs to have more pigment and coverage," Lee confirms. "Also, be very mindful of shimmer—it tends to bring attention to the texture of the skin, so it's not very flattering if it drops from the eyelid." Tip #9: You Need a Specific Protocol If You're Shopping Online "Let's be real—online swatches are never 100% accurate, and shade names aren't standardised, so it's best to tap into a brand's customer service or a trained makeup artist, whose job it is to know everything, from the curation of foundations to formulation to finish," explains Violet Grey's beauty director, Maureen Choi. "A quick email exchange or phone call with a trusted resource who understands your skin and makeup concerns can make all the difference in receiving the perfect fit on your doorstep. "Sometimes you have to try before you buy, particularly when it comes to foundation. A good rule of thumb is to ask for samples in three shades—the one you've shade-matched to your complexion, then one shade lighter and one shade deeper. That way, you can test all three in broad daylight and get an accurate sense of what looks best. According to makeup artist and Violet Grey committee member Pati Dubroff, using two shades of foundation—a light shade down the centre of the face and one a shade darker along the perimeter—is the secret to getting the most natural, subtly defined, second-skin look." This iconic pick from Koh Gen Do is a makeup artist favourite and one that Krinsky says she always keeps at the top of her kit. Best foundations for mature skin: Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation KOH GEN DO Maifanshi Aqua Foundation £68 SHOP NOW Favorite Although Murphy is also a fan of Koh Gen Do's Moisture Foundation (shown above) for mature skin, this formula from the brand boasts a slightly lighter coverage and is another go-to he keeps on hand for clients like Sofía Vergara, Naomi Watts, Kate Hudson and Reese Witherspoon. Best foundations for mature skin: Surratt Dew Drop Foundation SURRATT Dew Drop Foundation £70 £56 SHOP NOW Favorite "Since they don't settle into fine lines, dewy foundation formulas are also great for more mature skin because you can move them around and adjust your application easily. I love this glow-enhancing foundation from Surratt," Krinsky adds. Best foundations for mature skin: Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation CHARLOTTE TILBURY Light Wonder Foundation £34 SHOP NOW Favorite Both celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg (think Rashida Jones, Leslie Grossman, Busy Philipps, Chelsea Handler, Christina Applegate, and Lauren Graham) and Krinsky say they're big fans of this cult-favourite foundation formula from Charlotte Tilbury. It expertly smooths and hydrates and also features a helpful dose of SPF for an extra kick of protection. "I like to work with formulas that start light and you can build. … If your formulas are too heavy right off the bat, you can usually see it, and they'll also be more likely to settle into more mature skin!" says Greenberg. Best foundations for mature skin: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation GIORGIO ARMANI Luminous Silk Foundation £43 SHOP NOW Favorite Is there a more iconic foundation? We've never heard a professional makeup artist NOT praise its skin-perfecting magic, and Murphy, Greenberg and Krinsky swear by it when it comes to catering to their 40-plus celebrity clientele. Even though it has the prettiest satin finish, Greenberg says there's still enough moisture in the formula to make mature skin glow instead of falling flat. Murphy also adds that it's one of the best foundations for those seeking light-to-medium coverage. Best foundations for mature skin: Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 GIORGIO ARMANI Maestro Fusion Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 £43 SHOP NOW Favorite When Greenberg isn't opting for Armani's fan-favourite Luminous Silk, she tells us she also loves working with the brand's equally lovely Maestro Foundation. Ultra-lightweight, it helps to brighten and enhance clients' natural glow while yielding a flattering, semi-matte finish. Basically, it's glowy, but not too glowy. Suqqu The Cream Foundation SUQQU The Cream Foundation £68 SHOP NOW Favorite Suqqu is one of those under-the-radar brands that aren't household names but are fawned over by makeup artists and celebrities. A famed export from Japan, this rich foundation is one of the best for mature skin, according to Greenberg, and helps to keep the skin supremely hydrated while also providing the perfect ration of dewy coverage. Best foundations for mature skin: Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Cream Foundation CLÉ DE PEAU BEAUTÉ Radiant Cream Foundation £100 SHOP NOW Favorite Greenberg also shares Clé de Peau Beauté's epic foundation as another great option for older skin. The brand actually has a number of options that differ in consistency, coverage, and formula, but this game-changing cream pick is a best seller and award winner. It's luxurious, highly moisturising and full-coverage (but definitely buildable—fear not), and it makes for the smoothest natural glow. "I use a Beautyblender (£17) and a brush to work the foundation into the complexion and make it look like a second skin," says Greenberg. Best foundations for mature skin: It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ IT COSMETICS Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ £33 SHOP NOW Favorite "This foundation has a moisturising, highly pigmented, light formula. It has that essential coverage but is still light," explains celebrity makeup artist Jo Strettell, who regularly works with Demi Moore, Helen Mirren, Holly Hunter, Patricia Clarkson, Sigourney Weaver, and Brooke Shields. Best foundations for mature skin: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer LAURA MERCIER Tinted Moisturizer £35 SHOP NOW Favorite "Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer is perfect for older skin thanks to its multitasking blend of skincare ingredients that aid moisture and its great coverage that blurs imperfections," Strettell adds. "I use this when we are aiming to achieve a more natural or editorial look." Best foundations for mature skin: Nars Sheer Glow Foundation NARS Sheer Glow Foundation £27 SHOP NOW Favorite If you're looking for a "glowy, dewy, light coverage," Murphy says this foundation formula from Nars is one of the absolute best. Like Greenberg, he also prefers to use a damp sponge (like a Beautyblender) for his application. "This allows me to build the coverage and get the desired coverage for different areas of the face," he explains. "Using a tapping motion gives the skin a beautiful airbrushed finish."

Products to Swear By: These 8 Skincare Items Are Always in My Rotation by ARALYN BEAUMONT facebook pinterest email Favorite I don't know if it's just getting older, but as I live out the last year of my twenties, I finally feel as though I've nailed my skincare routine. I know I still need a retinol in the rotation, but I just haven't settled on one yet. These eight products, however, are my tried and true, and I will never feel good about my skin without them. I don't exfoliate every day, but the rest of the products get used in this order, day in, and day out. Keep scrolling for a bullet-proof skincare regimen. First Aid Beauty Pure Skin Face Cleanser SHOP Favorite First Aid Beauty Pure Skin Face Cleanser ($22) First Aid Beauty isn't the most affordable skincare line, but what matters is that I trust it for everything, especially when my skin is at its worst. This product cleans my skin so well; plus it's gentle enough that I can use it for removing makeup. Koh Gen Do Soft Gommage Gel SHOP Favorite Koh Gen Do Soft Gommage Gel ($52) Beauty director Caitie Schlisserman recommended this gommage exfoliator to me when I asked her for something gentle and effective. She really delivered, folks. I know it works because when I regularly use it (once or twice a week), it hardly has much dead skin to remove. Less fun, but the results are amazing. Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence SHOP Favorite Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence ($17) I've been a huge fan of snail mucin essence for years. I'm confident it gives my skin a really healthy glow. Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème SHOP Favorite Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème ($55) This is the eye cream for all my fellow dark-circled beauties. It's a pretty penny, but it's the only thing that really brightens and plumps my under eyes. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% SHOP Favorite The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% ($12) I don't understand how this brand is so affordable, but I don't ask questions when the solutions are this good. Whenever I have blemishes or redness, this product helps so much, but I honestly love using it every morning for the dewy glow it gives my skin. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration Moisturizer SHOP Favorite First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration Moisturizer ($36) Another FAB staple. The nice thing about using such dependable workhorses for cleansing and moisturizing is that, duh, they're dependable, but they also provide such a solid, buildable foundation so you can work in other products that meet your specific needs. EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Face Sunscreen SHOP Favorite EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Face Sunscreen ($39) The world already knows I swear by this sunscreen and this sunscreen only. Zinc is a must-have SPF ingredient, and using a tinted moisturizer just makes me feel more pulled-together and mature. Eau Thermale Avène Cold Cream Nourishing Lip Balm SHOP Favorite Eau Thermale Avène Cold Cream Nourishing Lip Balm ($14) Another A-plus rec from my trusted Caitie. This lip balm seriously keeps my lips so plump, and I only need to apply it when I wake up and before I go to bed. Worth the price tag! How Taraji P. Henson Channeled Diana Ross

How Taraji P. Henson Channeled Diana Ross By Asia Milia Ware Photo: Photographed by Dani B for The Cut It was a no-brainer that Taraji P. Henson wanted her look for this year’s American fashion themed Met Gala to be an ode to Diana Ross. “Diana Ross is iconic. That’s who I grew up wanting to be,” Taraji says. “She’s everything that embodies Hollywood, glam, and fashion. Growing up in the hood and watching her gave me something to aspire to be.” Working with her stylist, Jason Bolden, they leaned into cool references from American fashion and American music, specifically during the disco time period. “The flamboyance and courageousness of innately fashionable Black women during the time of disco inspired us,” Jason says. Tapping Jeremy Scott for the gala was an obvious choice, not only because he and Taraji are good friends, but also because he’s willing to “push the envelope,” Jason says. “Jeremy steps out of the box and dances to his own music, so it was a perfect collaboration.” See: All the Looks From the Met Gala Photo: Photographed by Dani B for The Cut While you may think everyone started preparing for the long-awaited 2021 Met Gala as soon as the sun rose today, that’s not the case for Taraji. Her preparation for fashion’s biggest night of the year is low-key and quiet. She spent the morning doing one last fitting for her embellished catsuit and then enjoyed her “me time.” “I’m talking to my girlfriends and we’re recapping my birthday weekend,” Taraji says as she drinks her green juice and water and just chills until it’s time to get ready. “I’m very low maintenance.” Photo: Photographed by Dani B for The Cut She started her prep yesterday with her manicure and pedicure, which she says is “therapeutic” to her. The 3D textured nails done by Temeka Jackson are blinged out to complement her Moschino look. “Each nail is art,” Taraji says on her manicure. The nails are decked out with Swarvoski crystals, one finger with a blinged out ring and another a 3D black rose. Taraji P. Henson getting ready at The Mark Hotel. Photo: Photographed by Dani B for The Cut Next up is hair and makeup. Her skincare routine prep is a series of products by La Mer. Her makeup artist, Ashunta Sheriff-Kendricks is really focused on hydration of the skin, especially her under eyes. To continue paying homage to 70s and 80s American fashion and disco glam, Taraji is going for glowy and glassy skin. For a skin-like foundation finish, she’s wearing one of her favorite foundations, Koh Gen Do. The glass skin look with a glowy cheek brings the attention to her intense smokey eye. “Think Donna Summer and supermodel Imani,” Ashunta says. To top the look off, Taraji went with a neutral lip from The Lip Bar. Photo: Dani B for The Cut Photo: Dani B To complement her sexy smokey eye is her textured hair, inspired by Diana Ross — specifically her hair on the cover of her 1987 “Red Hot Rhythm & Blues” album. To prep her hair, Tym Wallace used her own hair care line, TPH by Taraji for a moisturizing shampoo and a leave in conditioner to help the hair be shaped. “I went in with a flat waving iron and a micro iron so the hair could have multiple patterns and textures,” Tym says. The vision for the hair against her catsuit is drama and glamour, “almost like she has a fan blowing her.” “It’s big, voluminous, textured, and Hollywood glamour.” See below for photos of how her final look came all together. How Suni Lee Brought Gold-Medal Beauty to the Met Gala Red Carpet

How Suni Lee Brought Gold-Medal Beauty to the Met Gala Red Carpet BY MICHELLA ORÉ September 14, 2021 How Suni Lee Brought GoldMedal Beauty to the Met Gala Red Carpet Photo: Mike Coppola/ Courtesy of Getty Images A month after taking home gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games, gymnast Sunisa “Suni” Lee arrived to the Met gala beaming. It was a historic night for both the gala, which returned after a two-year hiatus, and Lee, who was attending the star-studded affair for the first time. “It was just incredible and it felt so surreal to be able to say I’m going to the Met gala at 18,” Lee, who attended with Victoria’s Secret, told Vogue. For the evening, Lee wore a custom gold bandeau and matching floor-length skirt by Sukeina. The brand deeply resonated on a personal level for Lee: “Sukeina means ‘bright light,’ and I think the brand represents the experiences and challenges of life. That really was important to me because of the Olympics, I mean it really just fits the whole story and vibe of the Olympics and it felt right." On the beauty front, stylist Irinel de León kept it simple and elegant, prepping Lee’s hair with the Ouai Wave Spray and using Oribe Superfine Hairspray to hold everything in place. “For Suni’s look, we wanted to stick with something sleek, clean and polished since the dress is very symmetrical and strong,” León explained. She then filled in Lee’s hairline using Color Wow palette in dark brown and finished the look with gold cording around base of the pony with gold buttons to match. Also playing off of the metallic theme, makeup artist Allan Avendano created a bronze look with a soft, smoky eye that was classic yet elevated. “We didn’t want to do anything too overpowering," Avendano notes. For nails, Mar y Sol Inzerillo used Valentino Beauty Pure. “I wanted her nails to complement her dress and she wanted pink. A dreamy manicure for the gal who made her dreams come true and won the gold!” Dreamy indeed. Scroll down for a behind-the-scenes breakdown of Suni Lee’s Met Gala look. The J-beauty foundation Lana Condor swears by for flawless on-camera skin

The J-beauty foundation Lana Condor swears by for flawless on-camera skin Some consider it a dupe for Luminous Silk By Samantha McMeekin EDITOR / OCTOBER 08 2021 Although K-beauty may have taken the world by storm first (or at least the loudest), there’s a quiet confidence in the beauty buys and trends brought to us from Japan. Known for acing it when it comes to innovative textures and formulas, our interest is always peaked when we hear about a hero product hailing from the country. And even more so when it’s a favourite of an actress like Lana Condor, who we sure has the pick of the bunch when it comes to beauty. ADVERTISING In a recent interview with The Cut, the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before star shared her love for the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation ($116.57 at Revolve). Behind the spooky glam of Netflix’s Nightbooks: Interview with makeup head Leslie Sebert

Behind the spooky glam of Netflix’s Nightbooks: Interview with makeup head Leslie Sebert by Mads Lennon 2 weeks ago Follow @madstvwriter TWEET SHARE x COMMENT We’re taking you behind the spooky glam of Netflix’s Nightbooks with makeup head Leslie Sebert. Find out how to steal Natacha’s glittery witch look and more! Nightbooks is a new fantasy-driven horror film that appeals to children and adults. The story centers around Alex (Winsley Fegley), a boy obsessed with scary stories. He finds himself trapped in a magical apartment by an evil witch, Natacha (Krysten Ritter), who forces him to tell her a new scary story each night to stay alive. Alex teams up with another prisoner, Yazmin (Lidya Jewett), to escape Natacha’s clutches. Leslie was responsible for leading the makeup department for the movie and talked to us about her direction for designing Natacha’s makeup. She utilized her creativity and extensive background in the field to bring Natacha’s character to life, focusing on incorporating darker colors, glitter eyeshadows and creating cat-like features to enhance Natacha’s sinister yet childish, appearance. A 35-year industry veteran, Leslie offers valuable insight into creating the ultimate witch look, whether you want to mimic Natacha’s appearance this Halloween or create a witchy look of your own! Find out what products and techniques she used in Nightbooks and more. The genesis of creating Natacha’s look for Nightbooks, highlighting the contrast between her and Griselda (the Candy Witch) LESLIE SEBERT: The whole idea of Natacha was she was (spoiler alert!) a young girl who was captured by this apartment, by this witch, she grew up in captivity in this weird place. She was still childish, and her makeup look, fashion, and everything had a childish sort of hint to it. But then also some really fun cool fashion. Supposedly the apartment moved around to different countries. It might have popped to Paris, so she would have seen how people are and how their fashion is and their makeup, so she just grabbed these things to herself and being sort of childish, and what little girl doesn’t love glittery things? It’s so fun to play with, so that was the basis for her. She cultivated her own look. She didn’t have a mother teaching her how to do it. She had to figure it out on her own. Nightbooks: Steal Natacha’s glitter eyeshadow LESLIE SEBERT: The main one that I found that stayed really well was Urban Decay. They had a few, definitely the Urban Decay eye primer before the eye shadow, and then I would do a really nice highlight and shadow with a Christian Dior eyeshadow that was a perfect base for it. It was number 646, just for earth tones and things like that. And then, on top of that, the sparkles were the Urban Decay sparkles, the glitters. They have the gold, which is called Starfire, the purple glitter is called Studio, but then on top of that, for some of the scenes, I layered the Urban Metal Heavy Metal, and that was Saturday Stardust. I really love those products. They are the best glitters I have found. There was also a Stila one I used called Kitten Karma that stayed well, but the Urban Decay was fantastic and highly recommended. Nightbooks Nightbooks: How to make your perfect Natacha (or any witch) makeup look for Halloween LESLIE SEBERT: The fun part of her character was [Natacha] was a witch, but she was gorgeous and fashionable. Still, she also was evil and part of that was the dramatic eyes the great I did a lot of the black with the little tails at the end. I also did double tails and triple tails and a little ’60s kind of thing where I even did an underline with a tail at the end and then glitter in between to accentuate Krysten’s eyes. I was thinking of using under-eye lashes, like the false lashes, but for the whole day, they just weren’t that comfortable, so what I went with I drew extra lines like in the ’60s and then in between, I would put some gold highlights or purple highlights or silver highlights to really pop the liner. Especially at night, which was the thing about our film, it was particularly dark and moody. The glitter will make whoever’s eyes pop even more when you’ve got the big black liner and big lashes, and then you have some highlighting glitter. It catches your eye, and it’s very dramatic. Nightbooks What’s in Leslie Sebert’s makeup bag? LESLIE SEBERT: I am a big fan of Armani foundations and Koh Gen Do foundations. I love beautiful Christian Dior eyeshadows. There are so many products out there, it was funny on this when we were doing her lips, we used a Kosas called “Wet,” and it brought this great shine to her lips. Also, another nice product which she absolutely loved is Living Libations, and Krysten doesn’t go anywhere without it. She likes the mint flavor, but there are so many yummy flavors like chocolate, and they’re beautiful. They’re a great basis for lip colors and lip liners and stuff. I wouldn’t leave home without them. READ: Nightbooks appeals to the horror-loving kid within I usually have in my kit the Christian Dior [mascara] called Diorshow. We used Tarte on this one which was fantastic because Krysten has these amazing lashes, and I used these great false lashes on her by Pink Cherry and then on top of that, I used the Tarte mascara. Also, I used that Glossier Brow Boy a little bit in her eyebrows and Anastaisa, granite, just a tiny bit because she’s got great eyebrows, but I really wanted to bring drama to her eyebrows because it was such a dramatic look. Her lip pencil was really fun because we were trying to find these great pops of color, an old favorite of mine that I hadn’t used in a while, it’s an Elizabeth Arden fuschia, and it had such amazing consistency. It’s beautiful on her lips. It works great, and she liked the way it felt. Clé de Peau they have beautiful concealers. Those are my go-to’s, and moisturizers are great. It’s good to have a good base before your foundation. I would say Drunk Elephant has some good ones, Dermalogica. We also used Sunday Riley. She has great moisturizers. A big thing is the fake lashes. If you want to make dramatic eyes, especially like a character thing, get the biggest lashes you can get.

The 13 Foundations Celebrity Makeup Artists Always Use on Women Over 40

The 13 Foundations Celebrity Makeup Artists Always Use on Women Over 40 by ERIN JAHNS facebook pinterest email Favorite 13 Best Foundations for Mature Skin PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES As someone who has a 71-year-old beauty fanatic as her mother (surprising I became a beauty editor, right?), I know all too well the trials and tribulations surrounding foundation and mature skin. Of course, finding the best foundation for your skin texture, tone, and type is hard enough at any age, but when you throw into the mix age-related conundrums like discoloration from sun damage, fine lines or wrinkles, and dehydration, the challenge only gets steeper. Being that my mom is an actual makeup artist, I've definitely absorbed some of her wisdom and tips over the years—minimal, if any, powder and absolutely no super-matte formulas. Their Best Foundation, Product, and Application Tips Tip #1: Your Skin Prep Is Everything Josh Rosebrook Hydration Accelerator SHOP Favorite Josh Rosebrook Hydration Accelerator ($44) Every makeup artist we spoke to explained that without a well-prepped base (i.e. hydrated and healthy skin) any foundation application will flounder. Prepping the skin with the right products and ample moisture is crucial for a seamless, long-lasting finish. "I am really, really big on prep—prep is EVERYTHING," exclaims celebrity makeup artist Tamah Krinsky, whose clients include Julianna Margulies, Mary Steenburgen, Judy Greer, Idina Menzel, and Christy Turlington. "Regardless of age, how you prep your skin determines how your foundation will sit on your skin, and the more hydrated and healthy your skin is to start, the better your foundation will look. My clients would tell you skin prep is the longest part of their time in the makeup chair with me!" Krinsky recommends starting the process with a luxe spray like Josh Rosebrook's Hydration Accelerator ($44) before moving onto an oil. She typically applies around six drops, although it depends on the day and client. "I take three to five minutes to massage the oil from the hairline to the collarbones. It's amazing what that alone can do for your complexion! My favorites are Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Antioxidant Oil ($72), Eve Lom Radiance Face Oil ($80), and the Josh Rosebrook Herbal Infusion Oil ($44)," she says. Afterward, she'll press a pea-size amount of moisturizer into the skin to lock all the magic in. She loves anything from Tatcha, Drunk Elephant, Dr. Hauschka, or La Roche-Posay. ADVERTISING Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Antioxidant Oil SHOP Favorite Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Antioxidant Oil ($72) Eve Lom Radiance Face Oil SHOP Favorite Eve Lom Radiance Face Oil ($80) Josh Rosebrook Herbal infusion Oil SHOP Favorite Josh Rosebrook Herbal infusion Oil ($44) Tip #2: If You Use Brushes, Make Sure They're Synthetic ADVERTISING Marc Jacobs Beauty The Allover Shadow Brush Synthetic SHOP Favorite Marc Jacobs Beauty The Allover Shadow Brush Synthetic ($34) So the jury is out on whether or not it's best to use brushes or a damp sponge (like our beloved Beautyblender, $20) for foundation application. Our makeup artists were equally divided in their preference! So we recommend trying both methods to see what you prefer. That said, if you go the brush route, Krinsky recommends using multiple sizes and always reaching for a brush with synthetic brush fibers versus natural hair. "No matter what foundation I'm using, I always use two brushes—one to deposit the formula and one to blend," she confirms. "I like to use brushes on the smaller side so I can be specific and blend around the structure of the face. To deposit foundation, I use a small flat synthetic eye shadow brush. Synthetic brushes don't hold onto pigment and products as much as natural hair brushes, so you save your products from being wasted, and they leave the foundation where you put them." To blend, Krinsky tells us she switches to a medium-size fluffy eye shadow contour brush. Although her brush process takes more time than using a Beautyblender, she thinks it offers more precision in addition to a more seamless result. Charlotte Tilbury Eye Blender Brush SHOP Favorite Charlotte Tilbury Eye Blender Brush ($34) Tip #3: Don't Buy Foundation When You're in a Hurry Sorry, but finding the right foundation—consistency, finish, and shade—takes some time and effort. You should be using it to even out your skin tone—not to cover your skin." Tip #5: The Right Primer Can Be a Great Sidekick Hourlgass N°28 Primer Serum SHOP Favorite Hourlgass N° 28 Primer Serum ($65) "I love to apply this primer from Hourglass after the moisturizer I applied has fully absorbed," celebrity makeup artist Quinn Murphy shares. "It fills in any texture issues like wrinkles, lines, and/or pores while simultaneously neutralizing excess grease and oil. It also reflects light in a beautiful way—almost like a blur tool." Tip #6: Apply Concealer Before Foundation Serge Lutens Une Bonne Correction Concealer Palette SHOP Favorite Serge Lutens Une Bonne Correction Concealer Palette ($170) "Concealer always comes before foundation and in a warm peachy shade," Murphy adds. "I apply the concealer in the dark areas under the eyes and over any redness too. Then, I pat on the foundation over the concealer. Using color theory—the opposite of purple-y dark circles is orange-salmon—is important. It cancels out the bruise-like tones so you don't end up over-applying foundation." Tip #7: Forgo Powder—or Apply It With a Beautyblender Beautyblender Beautyblender Pro SHOP Favorite Beautyblender Beautyblender Pro ($20) Both Murphy and Chanel makeup artist Kate Lee (who counts women like Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain as regular clients) recommend eliminating—or at least limiting—your powder usage since it can sit into mature skin's fine lines and make a person look older. "If I need powder, I use a transparent HD powder on a dampened Beautyblender and roll it into the skin," shares Lee. Chantecaille HD Perfecting Powder SHOP Favorite Chantecaille HD Perfecting Powder ($75) Tip #8: Know Which Products Should Be Luminous and Which Should be Matte ADVERTISING Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base SHOP Favorite Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base ($50) Okay, there's some science involved here. "Also, be very mindful of shimmer—it tends to bring attention to the texture of the skin, so it's not very flattering if it drops from the eyelid." Tip #9: You Need a Specific Protocol If You're Shopping Online "Let's be real—online swatches are never 100% accurate, and shade names aren't standardized, so it's best to tap into a brand's customer service or, in the case of Violet Grey, a trained makeup artist, whose job it is to know everything, from the curation of foundations to formulation to finish," explains Violet Grey's beauty director, Maureen Choi. According to makeup artist and Violet Grey committee member Pati Dubroff, using two shades of foundation—a light shade down the center of the face and one a shade darker along the perimeter—is the secret to getting the most natural, subtly defined, second-skin look." Their Foundation Lineup Chanel Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup SHOP Favorite Chanel Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup ($50) "This foundation from Chanel is one of my favorites for clients with more mature skin," says Lee. "It's a lightweight formulation that provides a very light finish whilst retaining a luminosity." Chanel Ultra le Teint Velvet SHOP Favorite Chanel Ultra le Teint Velvet ($50) "Again, this is a very light-diffusing formula, but it has a *slightly* more matte versus luminous finish," Lee explains. "It requires no powder, making it perfect for a uniformed finish without a lot of product." Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Moisture Foundation SHOP Favorite Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Moisture Foundation ($77) "Stay away from heavily matte products; they look chalky and settle into fine lines," warns Krinksy. "Healthy skin isn't matte. Think about how you look after a workout or a nice walk. Your skin is glowing—that's what you want your makeup and skincare to re-create." This iconic pick from Koh Gen Do is a makeup artist favorite and one that Krinsky says she always keeps at the top of her kit. If you're looking for a foundation with fuller coverage, Murphy recommends this as one of the best. Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation SHOP Favorite Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Aqua Foundation ($77) Although Murphy is also a fan of Koh Gen Do's Moisture Foundation (shown above) for mature skin, this formula from the brand boasts a slightly lighter coverage and is another go-to he keeps on hand for clients like Sofía Vergara, Naomi Watts, Kate Hudson, and Reese Witherspoon. Surratt Dew Drop Foundation SHOP Favorite Surratt Dew Drop Foundation ($75) "Since they don't settle into fine lines, dewy foundation formulas are also great for more mature skin because you can move them around and adjust your application easily. I love this glow-enhancing foundation from Surratt," Krinsky adds. Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation SHOP Favorite Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation ($46) Both celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg (think Rashida Jones, Leslie Grossman, Busy Philipps, Chelsea Handler, Christina Applegate, and Lauren Graham) and Krinsky say they're big fans of this cult-favorite foundation formula from Charlotte Tilbury. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation SHOP Favorite Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($64) Is there a more iconic foundation? We've never heard a professional makeup artist NOT praise its skin-perfecting magic, and Murphy, Greenberg, and Krinsky swear by it when it comes to catering to their 40-plus celebrity clientele. Even though it has the prettiest satin finish, Greenberg says there's still enough moisture in the formula to make mature skin glow instead of falling flat. Murphy also adds that it's one of the best foundations for those seeking light-to-medium coverage. Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 SHOP Favorite Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($64) When Greenberg isn't opting for Armani's fan-favorite Luminous Silk, she tells us she also loves working with the brand's equally lovely Maestro Foundation. Ultra-lightweight, it helps to brighten and enhance clients' natural glow while yielding a flattering, semi-matte finish. Basically, it's glowy, but not too glowy. Suqqu Extra Rich Cream Foundation SHOP Favorite Suqqu Extra Rich Cream Foundation ($74) Suqqu is one of those under-the-radar brands that aren't household names but are fawned over by makeup artists and celebrities. A famed export from Japan, this rich foundation is one of the best for mature skin, according to Greenberg, and helps to keep the skin supremely hydrated while also providing the perfect ration of dewy coverage. Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Cream Foundation SPF 24 SHOP Favorite Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Cream Foundation SPF 24 ($128) Greenberg also shares Clé de Peau Beauté's epic foundation as another great option for older skin. The brand actually has a number of options that differ in consistency, coverage, and formula, but this game-changing cream pick is a best seller and award winner. It's luxurious, highly moisturizing and full-coverage (but definitely buildable—fear not), and it makes for the smoothest natural glow. The Best Blurring Beauty Products to Smooth Skin Imperfections

The Best Blurring Beauty Products to Smooth Skin Imperfections Nashia Baker August 2, 2021·4 min read MACRENE actives High Performance Tinted Moisturizer MACRENE actives High Performance Tinted Moisturizer Courtesy of MACRENE actives Improving your skin's overall appearance starts with an effective routine full of result-oriented formulas. But the makeup you use plays a role, too; certain products, like blurring options, can actually enhance your skin care's efforts in the tone and texture department. These are "topical agents that fill textural irregularities to create a smooth, airbrushed finish," Dr. Macrene Alexiades, MD, PhD, FAAD, a New York City-based dermatologist and the founder of MACRENE actives, says. "They get their name by 'blurring' lines and pores." Dr. Hadley King, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, adds that these formulas are able to level out fine lines, wrinkles, texture, and uneven tone due to their ingredients. "They achieve these effects by using hydrators to plump, mattifiers to create a velvety finish, and light-diffusing, reflecting pigments, and color-correcting hues to give a flawless effect," she explains. Dr. Wendy Roberts, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist, agrees: "Like photo airbrushing, you achieve smooth, line-less, tighter-appearing skin," she says. "For mature skin, blurring products tend to be more hydrating." These formulas, which often come in primer and cream form, not only help those with aging skin, but also benefit those who experience acne or rosacea, since they help disguise blemishes and neutralize redness. Ahead, discover more about blurring beauty products—including some of our experts' favorite options on the market. "In contrast, I have formulated MACRENE actives to help you 'fake it until you make it.' I incorporated healthy blurring ingredients, such as titanium and zinc oxides, which are GRASE (generally regarded as safe and effective by the FDA), in a mica-free, talc-free formulation." LIVE MUSIC IS BACK—SEE THESE SIX ARTISTS ON TOUR THIS FALL IF 2020 WAS THE YEAR OF NO TOURS, 2021 IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. CULTURED HAS MADE A LIST, AND CHECKED IT TWICE, OF SOME OF THE MOST HIGHLY ANTICIPATED ARTISTS PERFORMING LIVE SHOWS THIS AUTUMN AND THE BEST DATE TO CATCH THEM. After a long hiatus from live music, there is finally a light at the end of the pandemic postponement tunnel. Between the crowds of ravenous fans and artists eager to return to the stages they were forced to leave behind for the last 18 months, the energy of these long-awaited concerts is sure to be otherworldly. To help navigate the tidal wave of incoming tour date releases, we’ve curated a list of artists—in no particular order—we’re excited to see on tour this fall. Some are heading out for traveling shows for the first time in their careers while others are making highly anticipated returns to the spotlight. PHOEBE BRIDGERS. Phoebe Bridgers Tour begins September 2 In support of her Grammy-nominated sophomore album Punisher, Cultured’s spring issue cover star Phoebe Bridgers is embarking on a tour of performances across North America this fall. “What interests me more than extreme sadness is daily monotony, that drowning-in-your-own-life melancholy,” said the singer songwriter to writer Cassandra Gillig. Honesty shines through Bridgers’s music and we’d expect a live Bridgers experience to foster a similarly intimate environment. The tour includes several festival stops, kicking off on September 2 at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, so why not join Bridgers in Tennessee at the start of her entirely un-monotonous journey? View this post on Instagram A post shared by Big Thief (@bigthiefmusic) Big Thief Tour begins September 7 Indie rock band Big Thief plans to steal the show yet again on its United States tour this September and October. The Brooklyn group is applauded for striking performances, where a closeness with the crowd reverberates. Lead singer Adrianne Lenker writes deeply personal songs that have earned the close-knit quartet a uniquely devoted following. Big Thief’s folk roots are drawing us to Burlington, Vermont as an ideal place to get the band’s full invigorating effect in person. artists on tour fall ARLO PARKS. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF POLAROID AND THE ARTIST. Arlo Parks Tour began August 5 It’s a special time to see a live performance by 20-year-old singer-songwriter and poet Arlo Parks. At a point of rapid ascension in her career, the London-born artist creates visually and audibly pleasing songs around specific moments, made universally translatable. Parks kicked off her first-ever tour on August 5 in the United Kingdom and will continue shows in Europe and across the United States until December 13. The first dates, she shared recently on Instagram, “were the nourishment I’d been looking for for 17 months! Playing shows is soul food, sharing space is soul food.” Parks’s performance for her “angels,” as she calls her fans, on the night of September 22 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn will be one for the books. View this post on Instagram A post shared by @harrystyles Harry Styles Tour begins September 4 To say our list would not be complete without Harry Styles, ruler of the pop music zeitgeist, is a grave understatement. In July, Styles posted an Instagram announcement of the new schedule for his previously postponed Love on Tour run. At the time of publication, nearly four million social media users had liked it. The fan anticipation of the singer’s second solo tour since the indefinite hiatus of his former boyband life with One Direction is obvious, and Styles is giving the people what they want: stadium concerts, themed legs and everything in between. For those lucky enough to snag tickets, October 30 and 31’s special “Harryween” shows at Madison Square Garden in New York are sure to generate pinch me moments. Moses Sumney Tour begins October 1 The allure of being swept into a Moses Sumney crowd is almost too much to handle. The singer debuted his album “græ” during the year of no tours. He’s now performing it around the United States and is set to hit Austin City Limits Music Festival for the first two weekends in October, where his stageshows can’t be missed. Our summer issue cover star, Sumney is a particularly genreless artist, known for introspective music and his resistance to binaries, subtly and ironically underwritten in his current look of sporting one white and one black eyebrow. Gracie Abrams Tour begins September 1 21-year-old singer Gracie Abrams has made a name for herself with a delicate, yet powerful voice, the vulnerable sensibility of her songs and her articulation of the all-too-relatable messiness of young love. This September, she’s finally sharing those emotions live with an in-person audience. Set to tour last year, before having to opt for bedroom performances instead, Abrams is embarking on her first run of thirteen shows, including two dates in London and four festival stops. A testament to her vocals and songwriting abilities, her DIY “I’ve missed you, I’m sorry” lyric video boasts 18 million views—no special effects necessary. We’d love to witness the Angeleno sell out the Roxy Theater on October 11, where the show will be just as surreal for Abrams as it will be for us fans. Craving more culture? This Amazon Hair Dryer Cuts Styling Time for My Thick, Wavy Strands in Half Jennifer Hussein 8/5/2021 Like Comments | 1 Doctors treating Covid feel defeated by their patients' relentless… Instagram boss says it feels like a 'snow day' as the Facebook outage… There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determined that, in fact, they really do. Yes, it's great to have a bountiful amount of strands on my head, but at-home styling sessions make me want to grab an electric razor and free my crown from the raven-hued prison that is my head of hair. My 2B hair type makes it easy for my strands to ball into a hefty, damp knot of waves and curls straight out of the shower, and blow-drying alone accounts for thirty full minutes with high heat to my head at its strongest speed setting. Holding a blow-dryer for that long is annoying enough (RIP my wrists), but it's also terrible for overall hair health: Excessive amounts of heat exposure from heated hair tools (think your curling wands, flat irons, and of course blow-dryers) can actually lead to issues like breakage, brittleness, and dryness. I’ve already broken up with my flat irons and curlers, but I’ve been trying to restore my natural curl pattern after years of straightening my precious wavy curls down and part of embracing my 2B, S-shaped waves requires using a diffuser attachment on my blow-dryer to define them. So I've been on a bit of a journey to find a gentle blow-dryer that will dry my hair without having to sear my strands on the highest heat setting. Extra bonus points if it includes a diffuser that can actually withstand my thick, unruly locks — and turns out, the one blow-dryer to rule them all sits in the e-shelves of, you guessed it, Amazon: the Panasonic Nanoe EH-NA67-W. panasonic nanoe hair dryer © Panasonic panasonic nanoe hair dryer Surprised I didn't call out a pricier option from other luxury hair tool brands like ghd or T3? Well, honestly, I was too — I was in a monogamous relationship with my ghd Helios for months on end (a lifetime for beauty editors that have a constant rotation of new hair tools coming in). There's something about Panasonic's latest addition to their Nanoe hair dryer line, which was released in early 2021, that whips my usually-unmanageable mane into shape. As always, with any new skincare product, patch test on your arm before you wipe your face to make sure you won't have an allergic reaction or skin irritation of any kind. But it's not just formulas that can irritate your skin — swiping your makeup remover wipes too hard can also cause irritation. When using a makeup remover wipe, it's important to use light, gentle strokes in order to not irritate your skin. Well, it’s not just something because this blow-dryer comes with a few pretty unique specs that make blow-drying and diffusing my wavy strands a breeze. First off, you’ve probably noticed that the Nanoe EH-NA67-W has a weird little hole at the top of it. That isn’t there just to confuse you — it’s actually the reason why it’s called the Nanoe in the first place. This is where Panasonic’s “nanoe technology” comes in and draws moisture out of the air to create hydrating nanoe particles that penetrate your strands. Why would you want more moisture when you're trying to dry your hair, you may ask? Because the process of blow-drying is, well... drying, which by itself can cause a lot of damage to your tresses. Through Panasonic's nanoe technology, your hair is only dried from the outermost point of the strand, which keeps your hair moisturized and therefore free of issues like breakage, split ends, dryness, and lack of shine. panasonic nanoe hair dryer attachments © Panasonic panasonic nanoe hair dryer attachments What’s more, this blow-dryer also comes with three attachments to choose from: your usual concentrator nozzle for precise styling and smoothing, an enormous diffuser head (which I will wax poetic about in just a second), and its unique “self-oscillating” attachment, which uses a fan-like motion to dry hair quickly. It’s a cool attachment for people who want to have styled hair fast (me), and it helps lower heat damage by evenly distributing heat instead of concentrating it on one particular area of your hair. It’s also an elevated take on our usual stagnant blow-dryer attachments, so any high-tech beauty tool fan will like playing around with it. As for the concentrator nozzle, it's pretty standard to most of the ones that come with blow-dryers — It does the job, and there's not much more to add to that. But the diffuser head is definitely something to chat about: Unlike other smaller-sized diffusers that will barely grab a fourth of my hair, this larger option fits half of my head's worth of hair with total ease, and the results are always defined waves without the immense amounts of frizz that usually come with them. Pair that with the blow-dryer's nanoe technology, and drying time for my intensely thick locks has now been whittled down to a measly 5 minutes of my day — and that's with me using the lowest options on this blow-dryer's three heat and two speed settings. And before you get at me about the price: Yes, I’m very well aware that there are cheaper options on Amazon and other e-retailers, but does cheaper always mean better? While budget-friendly items can perform, it’s more likely than not that your frugal option will cause more harm than good to your strands. So, this may not be a total budget option, but it’s worth the investment. Plus, it’s still $100 cheaper than my former ghd Helios and other luxury blow-dryers on the market. Closing Argument: This is the most underrated blow-dryer I’ve ever come across, and I’m shocked that only a few other beauty fanatics on the internet (like writers over at Woman and Home and Gizmodo) are crushing on it as much as I am. Curly-haired people will fall in love with its frizz-defying abilities, and just about every other hair type can appreciate the Nanoe EH-NA67-W’s abilities to cut down on drying time without sacrificing delicate strands. If you’re looking for the Goldilocks of hair dryers that fit between bargain-friendly and splurgeworthy, then consider the Nanoe EH-NA67-W for your mane-tenance routine (your strands will thank you for it!). The Best Sweatproof Makeup, According to Experts

The Best Sweatproof Makeup, According to Experts By Arielle Avila Nearly every body part sweats — and requires a specific strategy for staying dry. To help you deal with all of them, we’re rounding up all the best products for perspiration. Welcome to Sweat Week. Photo-Illustration: The Strategist. Photos: Courtesy of the Retailers In the summer, keeping makeup in place seems nearly impossible. We’ve all been there on sweaty days and nights: a clean winged-eyeliner look smudges into an unintentional smoky eye, or foundation somehow melts right off. But there is makeup out there that won’t budge for hours, no matter how much you sweat. To find the best sweatproof products, we spoke to seven makeup artists and two beauty writers about the tried-and-true favorites they have used on their clients and themselves. Below, they recommend everything from primers and setting sprays to eyeliners and mascaras. These products have withstood everyday sweat and lasted through special occasions, like a summer Pride parade and even the New York City marathon. The best sweatproof primers Becca Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector Becca Ever Matte Poreless Priming Perfector $27 $37 now 27% off Nearly all of the experts we spoke to said properly layering products is key for a sweatproof look — especially when it comes to face makeup. Five of them recommended starting with a face primer. Makeup and visual artist Clara Rae says that means “working in more sheer layers and letting each product do its job. Really let the primer sit and absorb in and then pack layers of foundation on top of that.” Celebrity makeup artist Amy Zdunowski-Roeder says this one from Becca is ideal for anyone prone to oily, sweaty skin. “It tightens your skin and keeps your makeup looking fabulous during the steamiest of days.” $27 AT AMAZON Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer $52 If you prefer a powder primer, beauty writer and consultant Kristina Rodulfo is a “big fan” of Tatcha’s Silk Canvas primer. “It smooths out pores and makes application smoother and longer lasting,” she says. The formula is made with ingredients that are supposed to help support the skin’s barrier function and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. $52 AT SEPHORA $52 AT TATCHA Alcone Stop the Sweat Alcone Stop the Sweat From $14 “This actually physically stops sweating,” says Rae, who notes that Alcone supplies makeup for big productions like operas and SNL. Stop the Sweat isn’t technically a primer, but Rae applies the tonerlike liquid product with a cotton pad or sponge and makes sure it sets before adding makeup. Because it’s so effective at stopping sweat, Rae doesn’t recommend it for everyday use, but she says it works wonders “when you’re going out and you’re really worried about sweating.” FROM $14 AT ALCONE MAKEUP The best sweatproof foundations and concealers The experts we spoke to recommended a wide range of foundations — including sheer and matte formulas. To make picking the right one easier, we’ve ordered these from lightest to fullest coverage, and we included some concealers, too. M.A.C Studio Radiant Face and Body Radiant Foundation M.A.C Studio Radiant Face and Body Radiant Foundation $35 “Products that are recommended for sweaty skin are usually matte, but I really believe there are some luminous-finish foundation products that are as amazing,” says makeup artist Isabel Rosado. One of them, she says, is M.A.C Studio Radiant Face and Body Foundation, which is especially great for “minimalist makeup wearers because of its sheer-to-radiant finish.” It’s long-wearing, comes in over 30 shades, and even works for people with sensitive skin since it has a hydrating formula. $35 AT ULTA BEAUTY $35 AT MAC Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation $62 $77 now 19% off If you want a liquid foundation with medium coverage, Rae says Koh Gen Do’s Moisture Foundation “always looks like skin and doesn’t look too heavy.” The lightweight formula is buildable enough to provide the coverage of a cream foundation, without the cakey feeling. $62 AT KOH GEN DO Cover FX Power Play Foundation Cover FX Power Play Foundation $44 For a full-coverage matte finish, makeup artist Tara Lauren turns to Cover FX. “I have used this foundation along with the brand’s concealer for clients in the unforgiving summer heat of New Orleans with no worry at all,” she says. Both products are transferproof and come in a wide variety of shades. $44 AT ULTA BEAUTY $44 AT COVER FX Covergirl Outlast Extreme Wear 3-in-1 Foundation Covergirl Outlast Extreme Wear 3-in-1 Foundation $10 $14 now 29% off Rodulfo recommends Covergirl’s Outlast Extreme Wear for a more affordable full-coverage foundation. “[It’s] truly full coverage, dries down matte, and once it sets it’s not going anywhere,” she says. “I have to cleanse three times — micellar water, cleansing balm, cream cleanser — to really get it off.” She also appreciates that the formula has SPF 18 for sunny days. “I wouldn’t use it on its own, but it’s always great to have additional protection.” $10 AT AMAZON $11 AT TARGET M.A.C Pro Longwear Concealer M.A.C Pro Longwear Concealer $28 “Concealers as foundations are already designed to be richer, more concentrated, self-setting formulas, as they tend to be used in areas that crease,” explains Brittany Whitfield, one of the many makeup artists who recommended concealers rather than foundations for full-face sweatproof looks. She fell in love with M.A.C’s formula after using it for a client’s bridal look — and for another client’s red-carpet look the next day. She says it kept her clients’ skin “perfect and polished but without looking like pancake batter — and there was no need for me to touch up two hours later.” $28 AT ULTA BEAUTY $28 AT MAC Beautyblender BOUNCE Airbrush Liquid Whip Concealer Beautyblender BOUNCE Airbrush Liquid Whip Concealer $26 Celebrity makeup artist Yolonda Frederick uses “a dime-size amount” of Beautyblender Airbrush Liquid Whip Concealer for a full-face look. “You can literally sleep in this makeup and wake up looking flawless,” she says. It comes in a range of 40 shades, and Frederick notes that it “maintains its warmth throughout the day without turning ashen.” $26 AT SEPHORA UOMA Stay Woke Concealer UOMA Stay Woke Concealer $25 Makeup artist and host of the podcast The Life of a Makeup Artist Jaleesa Jaikaran put UOMA’s concealer to the “ultimate wet test” when she wore it in New Orleans recently. “NOLA in the summer is no joke,” she says, and she reports that the concealer held up in the heat. “Of course, I made sure that I stayed out all day and danced my life away to really see what its longevity was. At the end of the night, I was still perfect.” $25 AT UOMA BEAUTY The best sweatproof blushes NARS Liquid Blush NARS Liquid Blush $30 Rosado recommends opting for a liquid blush on particularly hot occasions. Powder blushes tend to look cakey if you get sweaty, and cream blushes will most likely melt off. “Liquid blushes are really nice because you apply them and their staying power is almost like a stain,” she explains. Her favorite is NARS’s highly pigmented liquid blush, and she typically mixes the brand’s peachy shade Orgasm with the dusty-rose Dolce Vita. She also brings up the importance of layering here and recommends applying a translucent powder on top to make it more sweatproof and longer lasting. $30 AT SEPHORA $30 AT NARS The best sweatproof eyeliners Pat McGrath Precision Liquid Liner Pat McGrath Precision Liquid Liner $32 For a liquid eyeliner that won’t budge, Rodulfo recommends Pat McGrath’s formula. In fact, she wore it while running the New York City Marathon, and her winged-liner look was intact after 11 sweaty hours. “I applied at 4:30 a.m., and it did not smudge or fade when I crossed the finish line at 3:30 p.m.,” she says. “In 26.2 miles, there was a lot of sweat and tears — and this PMG liner lasted through it all.” $32 AT PAT MCGRATH Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel $21 Makeup artist Brittany Whitfield likes Inglot’s AMC gel eyeliners “for tear-duct lining with minimal to no transfer.” Both she and Rosado describe the cream liner as “bulletproof,” and Rosado recommends mixing it with a drop of Inglot’s liquid Duraline solution, which makes products even more waterproof and longer lasting. Rosado prefers the brand’s black liner (No. 77) because it’s “very stark, very bold, and super-matte,” but the eyeliner comes in 27 other colors. “If you can find hot pink, purple, or red, you can mix and use them as a long-wearing cream blush!” Whitfield adds. $21 AT INGLOT The best sweatproof mascaras L’Oréal Voluminous X Fiber Waterproof Mascara L’Oréal Voluminous X Fiber Waterproof Mascara $12 Both Whitfield and Cosmopolitan beauty editor Ruby Buddemeyer sang the praises of L’Oréal’s Voluminous X Fiber Waterproof Mascara. Buddemeyer, who says she is “beyond picky when it comes to warm-weather mascara,” likes this drugstore pick because it “really packs a punch in the volume department and stays on through heat and sweat.” The two-step mascara comes with a primer on one end (which Buddemeyer sometimes uses alone for a “softer” look) and a fiber-based mascara on the other that “builds serious volume and defines every single lash,” she says. And unlike other hard-to-remove waterproof mascaras, Buddemeyer says this “comes off easily with an oil cleanser or balm, so no need to worry about any lash damage or irritation when you’re ready to remove.” $12 AT ULTA BEAUTY $10 AT TARGET M.A.C Prep + Prime 24-Hour Extend Eye Base M.A.C Prep + Prime 24-Hour Extend Eye Base $25 For anyone with long lashes, Rosado suggests applying a setting powder (more on those later) or an eye base like this M.A.C one, even if you’re wearing waterproof mascara. She explains that if your eyelashes touch your eyelids, the natural oils from your skin can break down the formula and cause smudging. “I find this step really important,” she says, adding that the M.A.C eye base goes on invisible, keeps your eyelids matte, and creates a long-lasting barrier between lashes and sweaty skin. And since it’s a primer, it will help your eyeshadow stay on longer and last through sweat. $25 AT ULTA BEAUTY $25 AT MAC The best sweatproof setting sprays and powders Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray $29 $49 now 41% off Nearly all of the experts we spoke to recommend finishing with a setting spray or powder to keep everything in place and avoid smudging and transfer. Jaikaran and Rosado both complete makeup looks with Urban Decay’s All Nighter Spray. “Any time I have clients that are going to events, I always make sure I have this with me,” says Rosado. On multiple occasions, clients have come back to her saying their makeup lasted all night — through tears or dancing — and in some cases until the next day if they fell asleep with it on. As an added benefit, this setting spray “picks up the pigment of eyeshadow” and enhances the color, Rosado says. $29 AT AMAZON $33 AT SEPHORA Kryolan Fixing Spray Kryolan Fixing Spray $26 Rae recommends this “heavy-duty” setting spray from the German company Kryolan, which specializes in theatrical makeup. She likes that it comes in an aerosol can because it goes on lightly but is still highly effective. “I did my friend’s makeup for Pride — a full beat with a rainbow eye — and it stayed on,” she says. “She was out in the sun marching and sweating, and it lasted the whole night. I wouldn’t recommend it, but she slept in it, too, and it stayed. I couldn’t believe it.” $26 AT CAMERA READY COSMETICS Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder $39 Two experts also raved about Laura Mercier’s setting powder. Rosado likes the “universal” translucent powder for “super, super-oily skin,” as does Buddemeyer, who uses it year-round on her acne-prone, sensitive skin. “I especially love it for sweaty summer days. It’s super-lightweight, nondrying, and beyond easy to apply,” she says. “All I do is sweep it over my face with a fluffy brush after foundation and concealer and before blush and bronzer, and it helps create a smooth, matte finish that keeps my makeup in place all day — even through an NYC commute, which honestly says a lot.” $39 AT NORDSTROM The best blotting papers Tatcha Aburatorigami Japanese Blotting Papers Tatcha Aburatorigami Japanese Blotting Papers $12 “Sometimes sweat is inevitable, which is why I always keep a pack of these blotting sheets in my bag,” says Buddemeyer of Tatcha’s blotting papers. She likes that the natural abaca leaf and gold flakes “come together to gently remove excess oil and shine without messing up your makeup” and recommends “very lightly patting your skin — not rubbing or wiping — whenever you need a quick touch-up.” $12 AT SEPHORA $12 AT TATCHA GET THE STRATEGIST NEWSLETTER Actually good deals, smart shopping advice, and exclusive discounts.
